A casement window has an operable sash hinged along one vertical side. It opens outward like a door and is normally controlled by a crank operator. This design provides a clear view, useful ventilation and a compression-style closing action when the sash is shut.

The sash is attached to the frame with hinges on one side. Turning the crank moves the sash outward, while the interior screen stays in place. When the window closes, the operating and locking hardware draws the sash toward the frame seals.
The exact opening angle, locking system, weatherstripping and hardware specification vary by manufacturer and product line. These details should be confirmed in the written quote rather than assumed to be identical on every casement window.
Because the sash projects outside the wall, exterior clearance must be checked. Walkways, decks, railings, shrubs, rooflines and neighbouring sashes can affect whether a casement is appropriate for the opening.
A casement sash opens away from the frame rather than sliding behind another sash. This allows a large portion of the opening to be used for ventilation and avoids the meeting rail found in many sliding or hung window configurations.
As the sash closes, the hardware draws it against the perimeter seals. Actual energy and air-leakage performance still depends on the complete certified configuration, including the frame, glass, spacer, weatherstripping and installation.
The screen is positioned on the room side because the sash opens outward. A crank operator can also make the window easier to use in locations where lifting or sliding a sash would be inconvenient.
Casement units can be installed on their own or combined with fixed casement, picture, transom or other operating windows. Available combinations depend on structural limits, unit size and the selected product line.

A casement style does not automatically make a bedroom or basement opening egress-compliant. Any egress requirement must be assessed separately using the clear opening, operating method, sill height and applicable project conditions.

Casement windows should not be described as universally cheaper or more expensive than every other style because the final configuration determines the cost.
