Single-Hung Window Replacement and Installation

A single-hung window has two vertically arranged sections. The upper sash stays fixed, while the lower sash slides upward to provide ventilation. As a result, this style keeps a traditional appearance without requiring an outward-opening sash.

Falcon WD supplies and installs custom vinyl single-hung windows across the GTA and selected Ontario communities. First, we review the opening, room use and installation conditions. Then we order the frame, glass, colour and finishing details listed in your quote.

How a Single-Hung Window Works

The lower sash travels vertically inside the frame and overlaps part of the fixed upper section when open. Therefore, ventilation enters through the lower portion of the window.

The window does not project outdoors. That can make it practical near patios, walkways and other areas where an outward swing would be inconvenient. However, hardware, balance systems and tilt-in cleaning features vary by product line.

Benefits of Vinyl Single-Hung Windows

Classic Vertical Design

Single-hung windows suit many traditional and transitional homes. Their vertical proportions also coordinate well with other hung windows in the same elevation.

Ventilation Without an Outward Swing

The lower sash opens within the frame. Therefore, the window can provide airflow without extending over an exterior walkway, deck or planting area.

One Operable Sash

Only the lower sash moves. As a result, the operating system is straightforward, while the upper section remains fixed.

Flexible Room Placement

Single-hung windows can work in bedrooms, living areas and other rooms where lower-section ventilation is suitable. The final choice should also consider cleaning access, required opening size and the room’s ventilation needs.

Glass, Colours and Design Options

Manufacturers offer different options by frame series, size and glass weight. Therefore, the written quote should identify the exact product and glass package.

  • Double-pane or triple-pane insulated glass, within product limits.
  • Low-E coatings and gas-filled glass units where available.
  • Clear, tinted or privacy glass.
  • Interior and exterior colour choices.
  • Decorative grids and selected glass designs.
  • Brickmould, exterior capping and interior finishing options.

Some exact frame-and-glass combinations carry ENERGY STAR certification. However, the single-hung style name alone does not prove certification. We must confirm the selected model, size and glass package.

Sizing, Installation and Cleaning

Custom Single-Hung Window Sizing

Factories build single-hung windows to custom dimensions. However, sash weight, balance-system capacity, glass size and frame limits affect the final design. Therefore, Falcon WD confirms all measurements before production.

Choosing the Installation Method

Before we quote the work, we check the old frame, sill, jamb depth and exterior finish. Then we select the correct installation method. A retrofit installation keeps more of the old frame, while full-frame replacement removes it.

Cleaning and Tilt-In Features

Some single-hung windows allow the lower sash to tilt inward for cleaning. Other models use a different cleaning method. Therefore, Falcon WD confirms this feature before ordering instead of assuming that every single-hung window tilts.

Ventilation, Screens and Egress

A single-hung window provides ventilation through the lower opening. A screen normally protects the operable section, although screen size and layout depend on the product.

A single-hung window is not automatically an egress window. The clear opening through the raised lower sash must be assessed in normal operation, together with the rules that apply to the room and installation.

Single-Hung Window Cost and Estimates

Several choices affect the price. For example, width, height, glass, colour, grids, installation method, exterior capping and interior finishing can change the total.

To start, send us the project address, rough sizes and clear photos from inside and outside. After that, we can review the likely scope. We will still confirm final measurements before ordering.

Single-Hung Window Questions

What is a single-hung window?

A single-hung window has a fixed upper sash and a lower sash that slides vertically to open.

What is the difference between single-hung and double-hung windows?

A single-hung window has one operable sash, while a double-hung window has two operable sashes. Double-hung windows can provide ventilation from the top or bottom, while single-hung windows open from the lower section only.

Does the lower sash tilt inward for cleaning?

Some single-hung product lines include a lower sash that tilts inward. This feature varies by manufacturer, model and size, so it must be confirmed in the quote.

Do single-hung windows include screens?

A screen is normally provided for the operable lower section unless the written quote says otherwise. The exact screen size and layout depend on the product.

Can single-hung windows use triple-pane glass?

Many product lines offer triple-pane glass. However, the factory must confirm the exact size, glass weight and frame limits before ordering.

Can a single-hung window meet egress requirements?

It may qualify only when the lower sash provides the required clear opening in normal operation and the complete installation meets the rules for that room. The window style alone does not confirm egress.

Are single-hung windows easy to clean?

Interior glass is straightforward to reach. Exterior cleaning depends on the floor level and whether the selected lower sash tilts inward.

How long does single-hung window replacement usually take?

Production usually takes about three to four weeks after final measurement and deposit. Installation time depends on the number of windows and the condition of each opening.
